IKEA, the world-famous home furnishings store from Sweden with stores all over the world, was founded in 1943. In 2001, IKEA opened its first store in Barendrecht.

The challenge

Previously, IKEA Barendrecht used only traditional signage. IKEA Barendrecht wanted to increase its visitor experience and avoid visitor frustration when trying to find the right route in the store. Determined to improve the visitor experience, the challenge arose to transform the traditional signage into an interactive way of wayfinding. It is a well-known phenomenon that IKEA organizes their stores in the shape of a maze, so that their visitors have spend more time in the store longer and look at more products. With over 38,000 m2 of retail space, IKEA Barendrecht realized that optimal indoor signage in the store is very important. The signage is therefore mainly intended to show the right route and a destination, so that visitors don’t get frustrated and have to look at various labels and abbreviations. The interest in the field of signage has increased with the advancement of technology. The real challenge for us was to make it easy for IKEA’s visitors to navigate through the store and get to the products they’re looking for.

The process

Our services include digital signage software, concept and branding strategy, rollout and installation, monitoring and support. In short, we bring design, strategy and technology together to develop a complete, integration solution for our clients. IKEA Barendrecht underwent a complete overhaul of its digital signage in collaboration with Future Forward.

To enhance the IKEA Barendrecht visitor experience and welcome visitors, three large 42-inch touchscreen kiosks were installed in the store in Barendrecht. Traditional signage was replaced by a fully functional digital solution using Maptomize, our wayfinding software solution for display and management of interactive floor plans. Interactive touchscreen maps clearly show the right route and ensure that visitors can navigate to the correct destination.

Digital displays, which are strategically placed with the ease of access in mind, grab the attention of shoppers. By being able to navigate and quickly find the items they are looking for, IKEA offers an optimal and up-to-date service. Visitors can also browse the latest edition of the IKEA Catalogue and find out what special offers are available. They can even share the application using their mobile phones, allowing them to continue walking with all the information still at their fingertips.

The result

The primary goal was to increase the visitor experience by optimizing the existing wayfinding signage. With Maptomize, we have certainly succeeded in doing that. Now, IKEA's visitors can easily navigate the store in Barendrecht using our digital touchscreens.
